    The Big Lie will continue

Despite all the signs of a recession that are plainly visible, on Thursday, the US government is set to tell us that the economy actually grew at a 2.0% annualized rate in the second quarter. They will attempt to quiet recession talk in an election year. They will not tell anyone that much if not all of this bounce came from their economic stimulus as the lumpen consumetariat went on a spending spree to buy new gadgets with their newfound wealth. (Electronics saw a huge surge in sales over the past few months).

Sometimes it really makes me wonder if it is possible to walk between the raindrops. After all, in America, you can say you're able to do it and even though your coat may be soaking wet everyone seems to believe you.

I was under the same impression, Bud. I think they are trying to hide everything until at least after the election. After that, I don't know (I am really bad at 2nd-guessing politics), but at least they have less incentive to lie thereafter.

Of course they seem to have one built-in mechanism for lying: intentionally underestimate inflation, so that a certain amount of inflation gets mis-identified as growth in GDP. I suspect this becomes a permanent fixture. We might never have another recession wink, as long as they are inflationary!
