Don't talk to the police...
« on: October 21, 2008, 06:40:32 AM »
These two videos are of a law professor and a cop who are telling people how to avoid being the victim of wrongful conviction. This is one of the best 49 minutes of your life in terms of cheap insurance:

There is a group "Armed Citizen's Legal Defense Network"
armedcitizensnetwork.org

With membership you get three videos detailing all of these things from different perspectives.

This is separate from the FAS but owned by some of the same people.
I'm a member and my wife produced the DVDs (so I'm not totally unbiased).

I loved the videos too.  And I followed some links from there and enjoyed some others too.

The police are as much of a threat as the criminals. 'Nuff said.

Depends on the location and who it is. But yes, unless you know the  cops and not in a bad way, be wary of them. They don't give a rats rear end about you. Some prosecutors just LOVE convictions, but not the truth.

They need at least the basic info.

It is disingenuous to think they are mind readers and the CSI lab can figure things out instantaneously.

What's your opinion of the drama that played out in Oaklahoma recently?

I think he was sentenced to life for the killing of the kid, but if he did, he may may get a lesser sentence on a future appeal. To bad he didn't follow through with any advice before hand.

That pharmacist wasn't defending himself when he pumped the extra 5 rounds into the unmoving body on the floor. That was just plain homicidal rage at that point.

That was my thought too! But under the circumstances, I could see how adrenalin and paranoia could cause someone to take it further, such as in his case.
He did make the claim that he thought he was still in danger some how from the intruder. I suppose he would have gotten off had he not been video taping the shooting.

I guess there's lots of ways of looking at it.

Don't overkill when defending yourself, unless you're a sympathy figure or VIP likely to get away with it. I've seen the law go both ways: outrageous shootings ruled justified, and seemingly justified use of force getting people into trouble. It often depends on your status in life. Beware, use discretion, and get a good lawyer.

I think the pharmacist is going to walk. If the robber was already dead from the initial shot (to the head I think), then all he really did was fire five shots into an already dead body. That isn't murder, that's abuse of a corpse.
