Hemp seeds
« on: June 14, 2010, 08:50:00 AM »
Have you all thought of adding hemp seeds to your food storage? They contain more protein than milk, meat or eggs. They have omega 3, 6 and 8, and give you more energy than even  energy bars without the added sugar. They are super easy to store. Have a long shelf life and taste great. They also reduce your appetite which is a more appealing reason to use them in emergency situations.  I eat them regularly on sandwiches, in stir fries, for breakfast and even as a snack. Oh and yes they are 0.0% THC. Which means you are getting no drug effect.
I order mine in bulk from Canada.

I use hempseed meal but don't store it. It doesn't store well. Yours are probably, hopefully, hermetically sealed and packed in something other than oxygen (probably nitro-packed), or else vacuum packed.

It is true that hemp seed is ultra nutritious but given the other uses of the plant...I don't see me keeping any whole seeds on hand.  Not where I live anyway.  I have had the commercial hemp milk which is good.  (Be warned: those with employers that test for drugs, it has been said that hemp food products can trigger false positives).  In general, keep whole seeds (hemp, flax, chia etc,) and grind when needed.  Flax is ultra sensistive to heat, light, oxygen.  It spoils - without smelling rancid - in 15 minutes at room temperature in open air.

HC:
Can we get your Canadian source?
I'd like to find a source that's nitro-packed like Atash mentioned.

Thanks

Mine aren't nitro packed but are sealed in cottage cheese style containers. Have had no problems with them keeping. Taste similar to sesame seeds, and are good on almost everything!

I found a source for vacuum-packed bulk hemp seeds.  maybe even longer shelf life if stored in an additional refrigerator:

https://www.miraclesource.com/cart.php?m=product_detail&p=8

You receive (4) four 5 lb. conventional bulk packs. Our bulk packs are vacuum-sealed, boxed and impenetrable to UV light and moisture thus preserving the essential oils - Omega's 3,6 & 9.

Each 5 lb. bulk pack is based on the recommended daily intake for an average four (4) person household. Approximately (42 grams) or 4 tbls. for breakfast each morning. (20 lb. bulk pack = 8 weeks)

This product can be stored at room temperature and has a shelf life of 12 months. Refrigerate after opening to maintain optimum freshness.
