Do it yourself wind turbine
« on: May 13, 2010, 08:40:53 PM »
I'm going to try starting this project. Start small then build up. Here is my eventual goal-
1. Build a small wind generator (20DVC or so) that will power a 2 battery bank system. Ultimately should be good enough to power my laptop, some battery chargers, television and iphone charger. That will probably be equivalent to about a 100 watt system, should be very easy to do.
2. Add on 6 more batteries to the bank, quadrupling the power reserve
3. Build a larger wind generator (70-100 DVC) to power the 8 battery bank. This should be enough to run a room or 2 of the house.
4. Add on solar arrays and batteries as possible

I'm fairly confident I can produce a decent wind turbine (found a cheap 20VDC motor on ebay for only $10) using 2x4's, PVC and aluminum conduit. The only thing I'm really unsure about is a battery charge controller. Anyone have any experience with that?

The DC-540 Model is perfect for use as a wind generator in areas that experience average winds of 5-15 MPH. This Model Reaches 12 Volts at 130 RPM. My experiment was done with the generator axel pointing up with a pvc wind turbine. Worked well and I will still use it SHTF, but current budget does not include for connecting to the power grid which must be done by law here. Hey, cool! Take pictures and share them. Document the process.

I recall reading about a project like this in a magazine, and I probably still have it. I should look for it. I recall something to the effect of "these magnets are really strong. Don't put body parts between them."
