This is in the forum but buried in the past. The author has a lot of good ideas, phrased in the language of hurricane preparedness but applicable to other situations.

It's good to take a look at this again given the Chile earthquake that just happen. It appear to me alot, that you will be on your own. Don't look to government to be their in the heat of the moment.
