Uruguay out
« on: February 26, 2010, 01:08:07 PM »
Uruguay won't work as a refuge destination. Here is why:

* It taxes gold on arrival. This alone means that it is now defunct as a potential offshore financial destination. It is hard to understand why the people running the country decided to do this.

* They just imposed an income tax, as if to cement the fact that they no longer want to be an offshore financial destination. The country used to be a popular banking destination for wealthy Brazilians and Argentinos. Probably no more.

* It also levies heavy import taxes on "luxury goods", which includes cars and electronics. That explains why very old cars are weirdly common there.

What about Alaska?

I have seen remote property going for $2000 to $3000 for 5 acers you can buy from the state.

I also just re-watched the DVD Alone in the Widerness, about the life of Richard Proenneke. He lived in the Twin Lakes area ( in a log cabin he built by hand)  in Alaska for over 30 year. Talk about being off the grid and self-sufficient. It was nice to see that potatoes grow their. I thinking it might not be a bad idea to really look into what Alaska has to offer. Lots of areas with good water supply and able to grow a garden.

personally I don't see the attraction of such a long hual destination like extreme South America
where there will be infinitesimal probability to take anything with you that is useful because of the logistics.

I would think more like OperationalSec and concentrate on remote areas of western WA / OR
and also Southern AK or BC maybe near the coast. It would be much easier to haul your stuff

Are there many people preparing to move to South America? I see the benefit however the language barrier would be my main deterrent. I plan on digging in here in Kentucky. I'm just glad my parents had the forsight to move my family here from Sacramento when I was a child.

A few have it in mind. Spanish is relatively easy to learn. If you are going to dig in stateside, then Kentucky is a pretty good place to be in terms of growing food.

Offdalip, land prices in Western WA and OR essentially preclude the ability to make a living subsistence farming if it came to that. Taxes are also on the rise nationwide. There are other issues as well.

Karch, no point in moving unless you have a plan. Spanish however is fairly trivial to learn. There are huge numbers of cognates with English due to the introduction of Norman French into Britain, and the grammar is similar to that of many other European languages. 3 or 4 months and you'd be fairly fluent.

Land is cheap in the southern end of South America, and several countries relatively tolerant of us as immigrants. Some of the laws fairly tolerant; for example, homes-schooling is legal in several of these countries.

Contrast to New Zealand, which is beautiful, has a mild climate, but we are not particularly welcome, a great many of Helen Clark's "comrades" are still deeply entrenched in the social welfare bureaucracy (not that it matters, since the Conservatives have done nothing to try to fix the sorry state of affairs), and the social and economic policies of the country would be "out of the frying pan and into the fire".

The country also has "foreign affairs entanglements" some of us would rather avoid.  :happy112: Same problem with Australia.

Overall, the Southern Hemisphere is safer than the Northern on numerous accounts.

Im not sure if moving anywhere is really going to benefit anyone unless their is danger advancing, and one has to immediately pick up and cruise. What it sounds like to me is that once the new world order reaches the ends of the earth it won't matter, and it sounds like countries are adapting to this new line of thought such as the taxing of income in Uruguay. Point being, they want to be in the club.
