New here and even though this is an old thread It is something close to me so.......... As others have posted before yes pets will go feral and revert to the "pack" mentality. I have seen it happen in disaster areas. Unfortunatly Domesticated pets become extremely dangerous when this happens IMO due to the fact that there "instincts" conflict between pet and predator and makes them very unpredictable. More often than not the chances are they will attack a lone person especially a child given the chance. I can't remember where but I read somewhere that a large number of animals that "went feral" after katrina had to be destroyed.

As for us our dogs (we have two) will be taken with us if we have to bug out, or kept with us if we stay (bug in) which when we move we hope/plan to do. We have in addition to our gear/supplies ( wife and I ) we also have 20 days of supplies on board our BOV for our dogs, in addition to about 6 months supply currently at home, and adding more on a regular basis.

www.costco.com has pet emergency kits available on line for around $50.00 that omes in a 5 gallon bucket and includes food, water, toys, first aid supplies and such. They have/had them for both dogs and cats. As well as "kits" for people as well. Our pets are a part of our family and we won't desert them. FEMA, or whoever be damned if we ever have to evacuate. We'll leave them over the feds injured bodies.

I think certain pets could be strategic survival allies. Dogs for intruder detection, cats if you are in an agrarian situation and need rodent control to protect the crops.

The problem will be people who can only keep pets when the economy is relatively stable. Already pet abandonment is a serious problem. The problem pets will be the big, already somewhat vicious dogs, that some folks keep. In my neighborhood there is already a very serious problem with hazard dogs on the loose, and their owners tend to be people who will be among the first in trouble. There is already a problem with pet-abandonment, due to unemployment.

Dogs make good alarms but poor defense. A family with two big dogs was robbed shortly after we moved here. It was really easy: the burglars simply took chairs, backed the dogs into another room, and closed the door on them. Dogs can't open doors.  :rolleyes008: I've heard of other crooks baiting them into similar situations with meat. The crooks cleaned the family out, and worked at their leisure. The rest of us totally ignored the alarm that went off, because there had already been too many false alarms.

If rat ever does make it onto your menu, I would recommend soaking the dead rat in water that has been treated with bleach just as a precaution against disease. Submerge it completely with weights too to make sure any fleas die.

Man, this is one serious hardcore survivalist cadre here. I am not worthy.  :chores017:

Ah, one of my old posts. I think I am alone on the rat eating idea Stump.
