next door garden mentor lady's hubby does the 300 mile/week commute for oh 30 yrs or so and she has her own biz so they have the drive till dead car he buys new and uses until failure (or just, only just, short of it) and she has the "kiddie" van that get traded in when it hits last year of value on the trade in books. He has driven and killed a Yugo, geo metro, etc. My commuter favorite was a little Mercury Lynx that got 35 mpg i paid $1500 drove it for 4 years till it died got $275 at the junk yard and sold the new tires with wheels for $50. Got my monies worth fer sure. Drive em till  they drop is not a bad idea either.

Update: Called the dealership where the 2003 GMC was purchased and asked them to find me another one just like it. The salesman was motivated (he seemed) but did not get back to me until the end of the calendar year. So if the dealership were to get an "excellent" condition low mileage version they seem to think it would be worth half of what I paid for the new one. naaaa, not gonna happen. Nice to know what the high end would be anyway.

Lesson of 2009, if you dent the rear pumpkin cover on your truck and do not correctly identify the cause and source of the damage in late 2008 you then get to repeat the repair job in early 2010 when you back up into that rock that sticks up "just high enough". Yes, i will accept the offer of the loaned use of a small electric jackhammer and the rock will NOT be a problem again. In this process it was necessary to purchase SAE 90 gear oil to replace the spilled oil in 2008 and then the dirty oil in 2010.
Cost one quart SAE 90 in Dec 2008, $3.19.
Cost one quart SAE 90 in Jan 2010, $6.49
There is your real inflation rate 13 months 100% increase in cost. Is that hyper enough to be hyper inflation yet?
are there any substitutes?

I have a Ford Taurus that I use as my beater car. I put a new battery and some new tires on it recently. I figure I can reclaim all those before it gets hauled off to the junkyard.
