If you like books...
« on: May 17, 2009, 06:47:43 PM »
I love books and tend to accumulate a lot of sci-fi/fantasy when I stop at used bookstores.  I heard about this book swap site and have really been enjoying it.  Every time you send a book to someone, you get a credit to get a book.  Signing up and posting 10 books starts you off with 2 credits.  So instead of $7.99 (WOW!  When did trade paperbacks get that expensive!) I swap for the price of sending a book media mail.

I ran out of shelf space a number of years ago, this would do wonders for my housework problem and I could return to more HC reading.

Only problem I have with it is the hassle of taking the book down to the post office to mail.  Oh, and keeping my password from my book-happy 8 yr old!   :laughing002:

I love to read and had lots of extra books. We had a room in our church basement that wasn't used much. I proposed it to the board and started a church library. I bought the shelves as my tithes for the month and donated my books. Others started donating also, now we have a large library for all to enjoy. I will check out the swap exchange site you suggested also. Reading is a open gateway to knowledge!

Love that idea!  We get so many books here.  Both my mom and my mother-in-law were teachers, and they both discovered the USPS media mail rate.  We get a box of kids books picked up from yard sales, library sales and such just about every week.   :shocked013:  Adult books do better on the swap site, so I donate the books my kids have read already to their school.  My son's teacher is in her 2nd year and can really use them.

In CA, we had a great used book store in town.  There I would turn in all the used books for credit.  I was one of their steadiest customers, but never spent more than a dollar or two on a visit.  The owner didn't mind, we seriously provided over half of her kid's section!  Here in PA, we don't have a used bookstore anywhere close.

There's a book-swap store in the neighborhood center about one mile from my house. Dare I say thought that I have been buying and not swapping out. Either I love books and think I need to keep them for future reference (and will them to my next-of-kin), or I think they are evil and should be burned before someone else is corrupted by them.

I recently bought a classic novel for 50 cents. I was trying to learn some literary techniques, but I found it poorly written. For example, things would happen, and lack any level of realistic detail ("Acapulco has been completely destroyed". Just like that. Numerous seemingly significant events pass like that with unrealistic one-liners). There were other issues too, that I would not discuss in mixed company.

Into the recycle heap it goes.
