Here is a mainstream media article for consideration.

"You wouldn't be the first gringo in town, but (in most cases) you wouldn't be joining an established community of thousands,"

Notice how freely people use the pejorative word "gringo". It's sort of like the media feeling very comfortable freely using Yiddish words such as "Schikse" (literally, a female non-kosher animal, appearing in the Bible and translated as "abomination"; figuratively, "Aryan harlot") and "goy", which shows up in such charming expressions as "goyischer kopf" (idiot, ie, gentiles are stupid), goyim naches ("gentile pleasures" = depravity, perversion), stick goy (a Jew who behaves as badly as gentiles do), etc.

Numerous websites claim the word is NOT pejorative, and actually means "Greek". I think the word "greek" is "greco". Some websites claim the word is not pejorative except when used in "certain contexts", like, say, ubiquitously following the word "pinche" (obscene--and also used quite freely).

I'm not sure the odds would be in my favor in a "community of thousands"...of elderly. Anyone young enough to reproduce, or to compete for local jobs, is not welcome. These programs are typically set up with very specific restrictions. Not only in terms of age, wealth, and retired status, but also...

...whom you are allowed to hire, under what circumstances, and under what terms...
...what you are allowed to own locally (generally, not real estate, often not not a business either, or any means to defend yourself either...)
...your legal status. For example, if someone else rams his car into yours, you might end up as a hostage in an extortion racket.

No thanks. Not spending my hard-earned money in any of these countries, no matter how "welcome" it is (the money...not me...).  :happy112:

I would include the Philippines in the list because I have look in to it. If you are married to a filopina ( na-female no - male ) you can put all ownership in her name. I think more like $1500 a month, you would live very nicely. Last I check it was about 43 peso to the dollar. I know of couple people that have done this and they are very happy.

Thailand is similar. Lots of expats with businesses in the names of their Thai wives.

a driver in london convinced me he setup an entire large salon business in less than 2 months in thailand for less than $5000.  Huge labor force brought in on the cheap, no local regulation worth mentioning to development.  Not suggesting it but mention of thailand brought it to mind.  (same driver tooks stock tips from clients and lost virtually his life savings in Lehman...)

Thailand is "interesting" because the locals are unusually tolerant. But without land to grow crops, I don't want to be stuck in the Asian tropics during a financial crisis.

Lots of jungle out there to plant guerilla gardens. Water is not a concern. Just stay out of the northern provinces as the tribes up there are engaged in warfare with each other and they don't welcome outsiders on their turf.
