build a solar stove
« on: March 02, 2009, 01:51:35 PM »
I have been looking into solar cooking and I wonder if anyone has tried  (I would think so) going out and buying a couple of the foil things you put in your windsheild to reflect heat so your car stays cools. This would seem to work for putting together your own solar stove. I saw a kit for $59 but thought this would be a cheper way to go  and just as effective.

Also someone told me you could still cook on a cloudy day. Is that true. How much power from the sun do you need to solar cook? I not sure it would be fesible and worth the investment here in Washington.

It works best in "warm countries". You could use it in western Washington in the summer. The website I linked to says that they work as far north as Canada on clear days, "except for 3 months" (winter). However, our cloudless non-winter hours are lower than elsewhere in the USA.

Perhaps the best strategy with this is to use solar cooking to take pressure off of the fire wood supply.

You're right, Opsec, that's what they're using it for. Otherwise, the hillsides get denuded like much of the Himalayan foothills. Around the 17th century or so they had a firewood shortage in much of Europe; if you look at paintings of the time, people wear their coats indoors.

That's about when Europe turned to coal for heating. The industrial revolution followed that. Now they are running out of coal, and petroleum, and are finding themselves dependent on Russia for natural gas. That tells you what direction the region's politics are heading.

The 17th century also corresponds to a mini-ice age if I recall correctly.

I want to experiment more with this soon myself. It is very interesting.  Not visible from long distances as smoke on a fire is.

another idea Ive seen working myself was a wok, with a metal pole welded to the bottom stuck into the ground. he glued mirrors to rocks and would reflect many little suns back onto the wok. I didnt see his actually working but years later, I did it myself. my setup wasnt as easy to use. I had a pan on top of two piles of masonry blocks. so I had a decent spot to reflect the suns onto. I had about a dozen pieces of a mirror I broke up and glued to some rocks. using the soft dirt below so I could angle them in whatever way I needed. I got the pan just barely warm enough to cook slowly. this was in the dead of winter by the way, and of course more mirrors would increase the effects. although I do have a rather strong sun even in winter here...... but for part of the year, I think this would work for most people. save wood (and time processing the wood)like mentioned above, or hide your site a bit. Plus it is interesting.

When I lived in Ca. my neighbor took an old 18" satilite antenna had it chrome plated and used it to cook shish kabobs in his back yard.  I don't know if it was the smell of cooked food ot the fact that it was shiny the seagulls loved using it for target practice. :happy005:

Gotta be careful with large fresnel lenses and dishes. All it takes is a fraction of a second to give yourself a serious burn if you reach someplace you shouldn't.

I built one that is perfectly functional out of a reflective automotive sun visor. I use it on very sunny days only, and cook bread with it only. Here's the photo and the original thread.

I can get it up to 200 degrees maximum, which is sufficient to cook with.

as in the other thread, we purchased a Sun Oven also. i have cooked brownies in it on a sunny winter day when it was only 28F outside. they took three hours to cook but were delicious! i was amazed cooking outside with that low temp. i think cooking them in a cast iron pan helped...
