Just a funny win for frugality...
« on: February 23, 2009, 07:59:02 PM »
I've been stocking up basic clothing at the local Goodwills for the last few months.  While the family was out one day, we stumbled over "Super Sunday" at the largest store - 50% off their prices.  We left with a cart full of clothes.  My daughter (8 yo)  has figured out that at the Goodwill, she can get WAY more clothes then at Target.

On Monday she looked chic in fancy jeans ($1.67), adorable top ($0.83) and a great jean jacket with braided detail ($1.67).  Her friends loved her outfit and asked where she got it.  Megan launched into a full explanation of all the cool things you can get at Goodwill and how much money it saves.  Now several of her friends are bugging their moms to take them to the Goodwill to shop.   :laughing002:

On another positive note, our school does "leveled reading" which assigns letter levels to books.  Megan is at the top of the levels, and books are in short supply in 3rd grade.  Tomorrow we're donating 20 leveled reading books I was able to pick up 4/$1.

Good show.

Interestingly, my fancy little daughter does NOT mind shopping at the Goodwill. By the way, I live near Goodwill HQ (well, within driving distance), so we've got the one big original store (plus a few small ones).

Just like her great-grandmother, you could drop her off there in the morning, and let her spend the whole day, as recreation.

They used to even have a cafe, and a little museum, that were kinda fun. The museum was full of donated artifacts of some interest. Like old diving suits, and a hydroplane. I think those are long-gone.

Anyway, it helps that my daughter likes being "creative". So, she can often figure out how to alter or mend old clothing, plus she likes to find "vintage" looks too. If worse comes to worse, sometimes she'll take something apart and use it as a pattern.

I love to shop at Goodwill also, but don't forget yard sales. They are really big this time of year. I went Saturday and had so much stuff, we could barely ride home. The van was so full.  Not only can you get great deals on clothing, furniture and things for the family, but you can also find survival items as well. I got a bag of 4 kerosene lamps for only $1.

My neighborhood is full of yard sales in the summer. But I can never get anyone to buy what we have.

They want women's clothes. My wife, bless her frugal heart, does not get rid of clothes until they are pretty much worn out.
