100 mile diet
« on: January 31, 2009, 04:34:43 PM »
The 100 mile diet, where everything one eats is from within 100 miles is a concept consistent with the goals of a wide variety of special interest groups.  It also has the advantage of providing production of the food we cannot grow for ourselves within accessible distances, at least for the intermediary term.  It also provides mainstream political brownie points for those of us having problems honestly conforming to the current version of political correctness.

This is one of the sites available and I picked this one, as the group doing it, has studied the sustainability of applying the concept to the Seatle aria.  The networking and life style adjustments takes a good deal of the scramble out of preparedness.

We have been evolving towards this goal for most of the time we have been on the farm.  At the very least it takes the transportation cost out of the equasion, suports the local economy and reduces our dependecy on regulatory agencies for food quality.

This is part of a larger movement called relocalization. Just do a search on that term and you'll get lots of related information.

Personally, I think it's wiser to practice the 100 foot diet, at least in the short term.

The 100 foot diet may be wiser, but would you be wanting to restrict your food intake to the 100 foot diet any time soon.  Is this the voice of experience.

Probably not. That's just for when times get really dicey.
